As the first retail centre in the world to target the Living Building Challenge® (LBC®) certification, Frasers Property Australia’s Burwood Brickworks is the world’s most sustainable shopping centre. Considered as the most rigorous green-building standard in the market, the LBC® goes beyond a checklist of current best practices to rate buildings based on a series of performance goals and empower project teams to find creative design solutions. The centre was officially awarded Petal Certification by the International Living Future Institute in April 2021.
Located 19 kilometres from Melbourne’s CBD, Burwood Brickworks is home of Australia’s first rooftop farm in a shopping centre environment, acre farm & eatery. The 13, 000 sqm of centre also includes anchor tenants Woolworths, Dan Murphy’s, Reading Cinema and over 40 speciality stores.
Burwood Brickworks is a mixed-use development incorporating a range of sustainability measures including a large solar PV system, an embedded thermal and electricity network, wastewater treatment, and over one thousand independently vetted construction materials.
Burwood Brickworks’ masterplan aims to deliver 700 new homes, with the development surrounding a civic boulevard fronting the al fresco dining precinct of the integrated retail centre. Burwood Brickworks is a dynamic community encompassing diverse housing choices, open space and parklands, community facilities and amenities. It is one of Victoria’s and Australia’s most sustainable communities with the mixed-use project creating 2,945 jobs during construction and 718 ongoing jobs within the shopping centre.
