MELBOURNE, 16 DECEMBER 2020
Frasers Property Australia has won the Built Environment category at the Premier's Sustainability Awards for its Burwood Brickworks shopping centre. The Hon Lily D’Ambrosio, Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, announced the winners during an online awards ceremony today.
The Built Environment category at the Premier's Sustainability Awards recognises excellence and innovation in sustainable building or sustainable construction projects.
Burwood Brickworks shopping centre opened to the community in December 2019. Frasers Property is seeking Living Building Challenge® certification for the centre, which is the most rigorous sustainability measure in the built environment.
No other retail development in the world has aspired to Living Building Challenge® certification, which means Burwood Brickworks is on track to officially become the world’s most sustainable shopping centre.
“We’re proud to have created a shopping centre that has resonated throughout the industry and with our peers as a model of what’s possible from an environmental, social and economic sustainability perspective,” says Mark Gleeson, Executive General Manager Investment & Capital Transactions, Frasers Property Australia.
“It is a privilege to be recognised with a Premier's Sustainability Award among other high-profile companies and innovative projects. This is a proud day for Frasers Property and a testament to the team responsible for delivering this world-leading sustainable project,” he says.
A growing collection of industry accolades
One year after its official opening, Burwood Brickworks shopping centre is accumulating numerous high-profile industry awards.
Frasers Property was recently awarded the Excellence in Sustainability and Development of the Year – Retail awards for Burwood Brickworks shopping centre at The Urban Developer Awards.
This followed Frasers Property’s success at the Sustainable Building Awards 2020, where Burwood Brickworks shopping centre won the Commercial Architecture (Large) Award for its design, along with NH Architecture and Russell & George, and the Best of the Best Award, the major award on the night.
Also at the Sustainable Building Awards 2020, acre Farm & Eatery, the first shopping centre rooftop urban farm and restaurant in Australia at Burwood Brickworks, won the Commercial Architecture (Small) Award, collected by NH Architecture and ZWEI Interiors Architecture.
Indigenous design studio Balarinji recently won the Architectural Design Urban Design and Public Spaces category at the Good Design Awards for its innovative work, along with Wurundjeri-willam artist Mandy Nicholson, on the ceiling mural and outer facade artwork at Burwood Brickworks shopping centre.
A new benchmark in retail sustainability
Burwood Brickworks shopping centre delivers a net positive impact to the site it occupies.
The development produces more energy than it consumes, captures and re-uses all the water it needs and incorporates biophilic design elements, including 2,500 sqm of rooftop agriculture, extensive internal greenery, a naturally ventilated mall via operable windows in the sawtooth roof, and 247 citrus trees which line the northern façade.
In addition to seeking Living Building Challenge® certification, Frasers Property has received a 6 Star Green Star Design & As Built v1.1 (Design Review) rating for its shopping centre at Burwood Brickworks from the Green Building Council of Australia.
