MELBOURNE, 13 MAY 2020
An adventure playground where children can splash about, zoom across flying foxes, whizz down spiral slides or shoot a few hoops has been given the green light at Mambourin.
The district park being planned for Frasers Property Australia’s Mambourin community is set to become a region-wide attraction, taking playground design and equipment to the next level.
An area for skating, rollerblading and scootering, a full-size multi-use court for basketball and netball, two 6m tall play towers and a water play area are among the park’s highlights.
Designed by Tract, the park has been inspired by the local community and is designed to be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities.
Sarah Bloom, General Manager Residential Victoria for Frasers Property Australia, says she expects the park will become a focal point for the wider community, not just residents of Mambourin.
“We can’t wait to see this park to come to life, it’s going to be unlike anything people have seen before in the area,” she says.
“It’s exactly what is needed in an expanding area. It has been meticulously designed to compel the whole family to get outdoors and provides an organic space for people in the area to gather and build a sense of community. And, keeping with Mambourin’s philosophy, it will only be a five-minute walk, cycle or bus ride from resident’s homes.
“The You Yangs form a stunning natural backdrop to Mambourin and this park has been designed to make the most of it with optimum viewing spots, such as a birds’ nest lookout for kids in one of the play towers.”
The park is connected to hike and bike trails for easy access and a seamless integration with the new Mambourin community and surrounds.
Other facilities include a sheltered modern barbecue and picnic area (including restrooms), ample grassed open spaces, an adventure maze with multiple swings and other activities and a rebound and climbing wall – all within an extensive landscaped area with adjoining wetlands.
Ryan Davis, Associate Landscape Architect at Tract says community feedback about what the new residents wanted from their new park helped inform the design.
“Our inspiration for the park is the future community of Mambourin and how they wanted to use this extensive open space, as well as a vision for how future generations will use the space,” Mr Davis says.
“A real highlight for families will be the different uses for the park and the number of activities they can enjoy together.
“The park has been designed for all ages and abilities and also includes fitness stations throughout the wetlands area and flexible space for unprogrammed use, so a trip to the park from school or the town centre should be something to excite the whole family.”
Mr Davis says huge, custom-design play structures will be a unique feature of the park and unlike anywhere else. He says the structures are designed to inspire the imagination – something designers drew heavily on in the design process.
“This has been a big opportunity to let our own imaginations run wild. The enormous flying fox has been particularly fun to work into the design,” he says.
The Mambourin district park is anticipated to be complete and open to the public in late 2020, coinciding with the community’s first stages of residents moving into their new homes.
Mambourin is located in Melbourne’s expanding west, on the existing Regional Rail Link, between Werribee and Wyndham Vale.
The $440 million development will transform 115 hectares of vacant land into a thriving mixed-use community that will be home to 3,500 residents who will enjoy the benefits of city-style convenience.
Mambourin will offer an unparalleled level of connectivity and amenity, with plans for an exclusive residents’ club, a private school, a dedicated train station, a major town centre, open space, library and kindergarten and a local business district.
