Did you know the story behind the brand-new entrance at Tampines 1 – our suburban mall located next to Tampines MRT Station in Singapore’s eastern region?
The new mall entrance stands as a striking tribute to the Tampines town’s heritage, rooted in the history of the Tempinis Tree, after which the estate is named. Blending nature and history within a modern context, the design draws from the tree’s robust branches and intricate textures, symbolising resilience and growth. This thoughtful reinterpretation elevates the entrance from a simple passage to a narrative experience, weaving the legacy of Tampines into the mall design.
This is one of the key highlights at Tampines 1, which just completed its S$38 million asset enhancement initiative (AEI). Located next to Tampines MRT station and close to another of our mall – Century Square, Tampines 1 now offers nearly 200 retail offerings with refreshed outlets and new-to-market concepts, ranging from fashion, beauty to dining and many more. The mall is owned by Frasers Centrepoint Trust and managed by Frasers Property Singapore.
A key focus of the AEI has been sustainability, with Tampines 1 incorporating eco-friendly features such as using energy-efficient lighting and air-conditioning systems, solar panels, as well as high-efficient water fittings to promote responsible consumption among tenants and shoppers.
Additionally, the AEI used low-carbon building materials including green concrete, plaster board and low volatile organic compound (VOC) paint finishes certified by the Singapore Green Buildings Council. as part of Frasers Property Singapore’s mission to incorporate sustainable design principles into its projects.
HUES Full House Salon, Lenskart Studio and Oppa Bibimbap are some of the new-to-market brands that Tampines 1 has to offer.
This project includes the provision of a shared cycling path to support the Tampines community in adopting walking, running or cycling as sustainable and viable modes of transport. This aligns with the LTA and URA’s vision for a “car-lite” Singapore, promoting a healthier and more eco-friendly lifestyle. Additionally, 30 bicycle parking lots also created to ensure the infrastructure meets the community’s needs.
The mall’s atrium (right) is more spacious compared to before the AEI (left).
Other rejuvenated spaces include a larger, more versatile atrium for the hosting of community events and fairs following a reconfiguration of the common area on Level 1. The colour palette in common areas, including corridors and washrooms, has also been enhanced – with coordinated ceiling and floor tiles to achieve a more unified and aesthetically pleasing design.
The common corridors at Level 2 also got a facelift after the AEI (right).
Furthermore, Tampines 1, along with Century Square, will serve as two out of three injection nodes in Singapore’s first brownfield distributed district cooling project in Tampines. The two malls, selected for their sustainable and energy-efficient structures, will produce chilled water for their own cooling needs and for surrounding buildings within the district. The DDC network, comprising seven buildings, is projected to achieve energy savings of more than 2,800,000 kWh annually, which can power more than 660 four-room HDB households for a year. It will also reduce carbon emissions by 1,359 tonnes annually, equivalent to removing 1,236 cars off our roads. It is slated for completion and operations by the first half of 2025.
Tampines 1’s revitalisation embodies our commitment to fostering community growth and accessibility. By enhancing its offerings and creating inviting spaces, the mall not only serves as a retail hub but also as a vibrant community platform where shoppers and the community at large can connect, explore, and thrive together. As Tampines 1 continues to evolve, it aims to become a cornerstone of the heartlands, nurturing local talent and promoting a sense of belonging among the diverse community it serves.
