Mr Kew Yuan Chun, Head of Sustainability and Safety, Frasers Property Singapore was among the eight recipients of the Professional Leadership in Sustainability Award, at the awards ceremony held on 6 June 2024.
The award recognises Singapore’s Green Mark professionals who have made significant contributions to sustainable practices and driven positive change in the built environment.
Mr Kew said: “I am deeply honoured to receive the Professional Leadership in Sustainability Award. This recognition is a testament to our efforts in Singapore to champion sustainability initiatives and drive positive ESG impact across our real estate value chain as well as engage our ecosystem of stakeholders in our decarbonisation journey. This award serves as motivation, inspiring us to persistently push boundaries and drive sustainable innovation. We remain committed to transforming the built environment and integrating responsible practices into our business.”
Celebrating Leadership in Sustainability
Over the past year, we have taken progressive steps to become more resilient by building a network of sustainable infrastructure across all our retail and commercial properties.
Through his leadership, Mr Kew has been instrumental in implementing sustainability solutions across the business unit, strengthening our sustainability performance.
This proactive approach has been affirmed through our participation in the GRESB Real Estate Assessment and alignment with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). We achieved a notable improvement in our GRESB benchmark ratings performance, from 3 Stars in 2019 to 5 Stars in 2023, as we continue to enhance data coverage and sustainability reporting, as well as integrate robust stakeholder engagement practices.
Frasers Property Singapore was presented the Regional Sector Leader in Asia’s Diversified – Office/Retail (non-listed) category in the Standing Investments at the GRESB Regional Results Award Ceremony.
Frasers Property Singapore’s sustainability metrics for 2023 also witnessed significant improvements, with BCA Green Mark certification reaching 98 per cent in 2023, up from 42 per cent in 2018. On a gross floor area basis, 100 percent of our new developments and 98 per cent of our owned and asset-managed retail and commercial properties have achieved BCA Green Mark certification to date.
Powering Positive Change Through Collaboration
Frasers Property’s journey to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 hinges on strong collaboration with stakeholders across the value chain. This is fostered through the implementation of a Group Responsible Sourcing Policy and procurement procedures to positively influence the sustainability practices of our suppliers, vendors, and contractors. Uniquely positioned within the real estate value chain, the Group is well-placed to lead initiatives that drive positive change. This involves regular engagement with tenants, suppliers, and shoppers and partnerships with solutions providers as part of our efforts to move the needle toward collective sustainability.
We actively seek partners who share our sustainability commitment. This translates into expanding collaborations with like-minded organisations to implement innovative, eco-conscious solutions at our properties.
Frasers Property Singapore’s Retail Tenant Engagement Event 2023, where over 100 partners and tenants across its network of malls gathered to exchange sustainability thought leadership ideas.
A prime example is our partnership with SP Group (SP), which includes the largest single solarisation rollout for retail malls in Singapore to date, aligning with the Singapore Green Plan 2030.
This collaboration extends beyond solar power, by contributing to sustainable infrastructure for the wider community. Our properties, Century Square and Tampines 1 serve as key nodes for the Distributed District Cooling network in Tampines, which will be operational in the first half of 2025. This network is projected to reduce annual carbon emissions in Tampines by 1,359 tonnes and generate energy savings exceeding 2.8 million kWh, enough to power over 905 three-room HDB households.
Furthermore, SP’s Green Energy Technology (GET) TenantCare solution has been implemented across 17 of our properties in Singapore. This provides us with insights into tenants’ real-time energy consumption, empowering the business to work with tenants to actively manage and reduce their energy consumption.
Frasers Property partners with SP Group to implement GET TenantCare across 17 of its properties in Singapore, offering real-time insights into tenants’ energy consumption and enabling targeted strategies for reduction and optimising efficiency.
In a significant move towards a circular economy in our retail operations, we are partnering with Life Lab Resources to implement a food waste valorisation system across five of our malls in 2024, supporting a zero-waste and food-resilient future.
Through continuous innovation and strategic partnerships, we are setting new benchmarks in sustainability, to help chart the path for our real estate ecosystem towards an eco-conscious future.
Creating Places for Good
The Group’s comprehensive approach to ESG has resulted in tangible achievements across the board, from recycling over 6,000 tonnes of waste to contributing nearly S$2 million through approximately 200 community investment activities. With over 6,800 employee volunteer hours, initiatives like the Food Bank Distribution exercise in Singapore have made a significant positive impact on the community, showcasing our dedication to inclusive, and eco-conscious growth.
