Studio Miu Art opens its doors to artists of all ages and all levels at the heart of Orchard Road – The Centrepoint.
Spanish sculptor and painter Pablo Picasso once said that “the purpose of art is to wash away from the soul the dust of our everyday lives.” From painting to drawing, sculpting or photography, engaging in art is an enriching and fulfilling activity that anyone can enjoy.
Multiple studies have shown that creating art brings much benefits. Not only does it help reduce stress levels in adults, it also encourages fine motor skills, neural development, and problem-solving abilities amongst children.
Located at The Centrepoint, Studio Miu Art is a one-stop haven that caters to budding and experienced artists alike. Its team of skilled teachers encourage their students to put aside pre-conceived notions of art – by expressing themselves creatively and learning at their own pace.
We caught up with Grace Cabalida, studio manager of Studio Miu Art, to find out more about the benefits of art and the activities the brand has to offer.
Why does Studio Miu Art offer classes for all ages?
Art can be enjoyed and learnt at any age, and Studio Miu Art aims to engage individuals to experience art discovery at any stage in life. Our students are as young as two and a half years and we have specially designed ‘Fun Arts’ and ‘Pottery and Ceramics’ classes for the youngest learners.
Our adult classes are very popular as well. Art can be enjoyed by the young, the old and everyone in between. It is never too late to hone your artistic skills and that is why we offer classes for all ages.
How does engaging in creative activities benefit a person?
There are so many benefits to engaging in creative activities. It is stimulating, enjoyable and encourages creative thinking and imagination in kids and adults. Many parents want their children to take up art because it fosters self-expression and allows them to make their own decisions. That feeling of self-achievement from having created something by themselves is a great boost to confidence and self-esteem, and offers a safe space for children to communicate their feelings in a positive way.
Beyond that, art is also a great reliever of stress and a relaxing distraction from our busy lives.
How do children and adults benefit differently from art classes?
Children and adults benefit differently from art classes based on their respective skills development and the various art techniques designed to be taught at an appropriate age. We plan the lessons based according to the students’ level of understanding, but generally both children and adults walk away with a great sense of achievement.
Specifically for the little ones, we find that their fine motor-skills do improve over time because of their regular use of pencils and paintbrushes. The adults love to attend the classes for the social element as well where they can chat and share experiences and ideas with one another. It also gives them a break from the stresses of everyday life and a chance to relax and unwind.
Class sizes are kept small at Studio Miu Art for a more conducive learning environment.
Tell us how are classes taught differently for the different age groups?
We have a variety of classes catered specifically for children, and we have classes which are open to everyone above a certain age. Children’s classes (from 2.5 to 12 years old) are mostly conducted based on curriculum. The Junior Artist Class for example is a fun space where kids get to test out different art mediums. It is fun and lively and it and an ideal setting for them to develop their curiosity and desire for creativity.
The Academic Art Class is open to students between 7 to 12 years, and these lessons are designed with process-driven initiatives aimed at developing critical-thinking. There is also an Advanced Junior Class where children are taught more advanced techniques aimed at enhancing creativity and understanding of fine arts. Thus, we have a range of classes aimed at different levels and requirements to suit each individual.
What kind of classes are offered at Studio Miu Art?
Studio Miu Art offers lessons in drawing and painting using different techniques and mediums such as oil and water-based paint, acrylic, charcoal and pencil. Ceramic art is very popular with both children and adults.
Their more popular ceramic art classes are open to both children and adults.
For those aged 12 and above, the Electric Potter’s Wheel Class is also very well received. We conduct those in small groups of two students and each class lasts one and a half hours. Apart from that we also conduct classes in calligraphy and digital art. There is something for everyone.
What would you say to someone who is keen to learn art but has no prior experience?
When it comes to art, there is no right or wrong and it is never too late to start. Art is about expression and prior experience is not needed to join any of the classes at Studio Miu Art. Alternatively you can start at home by simply sketching with pencil and paper. Just give it a try and let the creative process take over.
Besides art classes, what other services does Studio Miu Art offer?
Besides art classes, we also offer art and design consultation and we accept commission work such as logo design, mural, graphic design projects, and customized paintings. We organise corporate events like team bonding workshops and art parties as well for adults and kids alike. We also have a Show Window Gallery where we display art work by local and foreign artists every month.
