Coorparoo Square, a joint venture between Honeycombes Property Group and Frasers Property Australia, has won the highly coveted national Liberty Award for Best Mixed-Use Development at the 2019 Property Council & Rider Levett Bucknall Innovation & Excellence Awards.

Coorparoo Square, designed in consultation with Conrad Gargett Architects, comprises 366 apartments across three residential towers, exclusive residents use facilities and a major new retail, dining and entertainment precinct that has reactivated the street front.

Coorparoo Square has transformed Queensland’s first MYER store into a landmark inner-urban precinct. The project, which began construction in 2015 and was completed in 2017, was an instant hit with the market, achieving a sell-out well ahead of expectations. Ninety per cent of the project’s first stage had sold within three months of release.

Peter Honeycombe, Managing Director at Honeycombes Property Group, says it was a great honour to have been selected for this coveted national award.

“Our collaborative vision for Coorparoo Square, in partnership with Frasers Property, was for it to become the new heart of Coorparoo, a landmark precinct for inner Brisbane, and to create a place where the community, residents and passers-by could gather and meet. Coorparoo Square was to become the focal point of the suburb.

“Coorparoo itself is a heritage rich suburb, and this was especially important as the site of Queensland’s first MYER building. Due to its heritage significance we took a genuine approach to our urban renewal objectives that was community inclusive.”

Frasers Property Australia and Honeycombes Property Group engaged closely with the community throughout the development process, with many locals providing images for use in a 450 metre ‘super graphic’ that connects the shopfronts throughout the retail precinct. The images include the former MYER building and local area landmarks, as well as the trams that used to trundle along Old Cleveland Road.

The joint venture partners also paid tribute to the property’s history by resurrecting the original MYER sign on the site.

Coorparoo Square was recognised in the annual Property Council of Australia & Rider Levett Bucknall Innovation & Excellence Awards for delivering a mixed use of residential apartments and a vibrant new retail, dining and entertainment precinct comprising a Dendy cinema complex, ALDI supermarket and 2650 sqm of supporting retail tenancies.

The hotly contested category saw five other state-of-the-art developments compete as finalists for the prestigious award including Meriton’s Altitude Parramatta; Cornerstone Property Group’s Griffith Teas in Surry Hills; Jewel in Wentworth Point developed by Payce and Sekisui House; HCAP Development’s Haven in Newstead and Lucent Gasworks in Newstead developed by Cavcorp.

Coorparoo Square’s residents enjoy resort-style amenities including Club Coorparoo, a podium level recreation area featuring a tennis court, 25 metre lap pool, barbecue areas and gym.
