Harsha, Managing Director of Sustainable Energy Solutions, at the signing ceremony with Ms Soon Su Lin, CEO of Frasers Property Singapore, Mr Richard Ng, CEO of REIT Manager of Frasers Centrepoint Trust and Ms Anthea Lee, CEO of REIT Manager of Frasers Logistics & Commercial Trust. It marks the strategic partnership between the two organisations to drive sustainable energy solutions including the latest initiative to install solar photovoltaic (PV) system across Frasers Property’s seven properties in Singapore.

Frasers Property is partnering SP Group (SP) to install close to 4,500 square metres (sqm) of solar panels across seven of the Group’s retail and commercial properties in Singapore – the country’s largest single solarisation roll-out for retail malls to date.

A collaboration between Frasers Property and SP on energy-saving solutions, both parties inked a partnership agreement during a signing ceremony on Tuesday, 9 April 2024.

It will help Frasers Property on its net-zero carbon journey and is aligned with the spirit of the commitments made by over 100 countries, including Singapore, at the United Nations’ COP28 summit1 to triple renewable energy capacity globally by 2030. These initiatives in Singapore are also part of Frasers Property’s Group-wide ESG goal to install 215 MW of renewable energy capacity at its properties by 2030.

The solar panels are projected to generate about 920,000 kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity per year, equivalent to powering about 450 four-room Housing Development Board (HDB) flats. This works out to about S$220,000 worth of annual savings in energy costs and will reduce over 370 tonnes of carbon emissions yearly, similar to taking about 80 cars off the road. It will supply an average two per cent of the energy needs of the participating buildings.

Mr Kew Yuan Chun, Head of Sustainability & Safety, Frasers Property Singapore gives an opening address on how the solarisation programme is aligned with Frasers Property's commitment to reach net-zero carbon by 2050 and install 215 MW of renewable energy capacity at its properties by 2030.

With this latest initiative, Frasers Property will have a total of 14,250 sqm of solar panels across 10 of its owned or managed retail and commercial properties in Singapore. This would result in about 1.9 million kWh of electricity per year, equivalent to powering 935 four-room HDB flats.

SP will manage the design, supply, delivery, installation, testing and commissioning of the solar PV system at Frasers Property’s properties. To be completed by end-2024, the solar panel installation will be rolled out across seven properties — Alexandra Technopark, Causeway Point, Century Square, Hougang Mall, Northpoint City (North Wing), Tampines 1 and White Sands.

Clockwise from top left: Alexandra Technopark, Hougang Mall, White Sands and Northpoint City are among the seven properties that will have solar panels installed by end-2024.

Alexandra Technopark, a quality office and business park at the Alexandra Road commercial precinct, is held by Frasers Logistics & Commercial Trust (FLCT); while the remaining properties are retail malls located near public transportation nodes in the suburban regions and are held by Frasers Centrepoint Trust (FCT). The properties are managed by the Group’s business unit Frasers Property Singapore.

Ms Soon Su Lin, Chief Executive Officer, Frasers Property Singapore said: “This latest collaboration with SP Group in the solarisation programme across seven of our retail and commercial properties underscores Frasers Property’s commitment to reach net-zero carbon by 2050 and is aligned with the nation’s solar power deployment target of at least 2,000 megawatt-peak by 2030. This marks another chapter in our fruitful partnership with SP Group, as we work closely with them on other energy saving solutions at our properties such as Singapore’s first brownfield distributed district cooling network in Tampines. In support of Singapore Green Plan 2030, we will innovate continuously to build more sustainable, inclusive and healthy spaces for all.”

Mr S. Harsha, SP Group’s Managing Director of Sustainable Energy Solutions said: “We are proud to be Frasers Property’s sustainability partner in its decarbonisation journey. The installation of rooftop solar PV systems across its retail malls is a continuation of our long-term collaboration. From sustainable cooling to harnessing renewable energy, we are committed to enabling Frasers Property to achieve its net-zero carbon emissions target through our suite of solutions.”

The latest announcement represents another milestone in the partnership between Frasers Property and SP, which has seen the implementation of integrated sustainable solutions at properties in both Singapore and abroad.

In Singapore, Frasers Property supports SP’s brownfield distributed district cooling (DDC) project with its retail properties, Tampines 1 and Century Square, forming two of the three key injection nodes for the network. The two malls, selected for their sustainable and energy-efficient structures, will produce chilled water for their own cooling needs and for surrounding buildings within the district. The DDC network, comprising seven buildings, is projected to achieve energy savings of more than 2,800,000 kWh annually, which can power more than 660 four-room HDB households for a year. It will also reduce carbon emissions by 1,359 tonnes annually, equivalent to removing 1,236 cars off our roads. It is slated for completion and operations by the first half of 2025.

Frasers Property has also adopted SP’s Green Energy Technology (GET) TenantCare solution across 17 of its properties in Singapore, which offers near-time insights into tenants’ real-time energy consumption, enabling targeted strategies for energy reduction in collaboration with the tenants. Aggregated data on carbon emissions allows for the adoption of proactive measures, while automated operations streamline processes and enhance responsiveness to potential energy issues, enhancing efficiency.

Causeway Point is one of the seven properties where the solar panel installation will be rolled out in Singapore's largest solarisation initiative.

In support of Singapore’s push towards green mobility, Frasers Property has worked with various vendors to deploy more than 50 electric vehicle (EV) charging points across its retail and commercial properties. These include 18 EV charging points under the collaboration with SP, with another 7 upcoming ones to bolster the islandwide network.

The partnership between both companies also extended beyond Singapore when Frasers Property and SP signed a Memorandum of Understanding in August 2023 to jointly develop and implement their integrated smart building energy management solutions in Binh Duong Industrial Park (BDIP) near Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. This partnership will help the industrial park accelerate the adoption of green energy solutions, enable energy savings and carbon emissions reduction for all tenants. A feasibility study to implement a green micro-grid at BDIP is also in the works, which would potentially enable access for tenants to renewable energy.

Mr Michael Lim, Head of Energy Services for Singapore & Malaysia, SP Group delivers closing remarks at the signing ceremony. From sustainable cooling to harnessing renewable energy, SP is pleased to enable Frasers Property on its decarbonisation journey with our suite of sustainable energy solutions.

Frasers Property is committed to working with partners to develop a sustainable ecosystem across all its properties in Singapore. Earlier this year, it announced a partnership with food security solution provider, Life Lab Resources, to roll out the WasteMaster food waste valorisation system to five of its retail properties. This first-of-its-kind circular economy solution for food waste management is an effort to collaborate with like-minded partners towards a zero-waste and food-resilient future, as well as support its tenants and consumers with efficient solutions so that they can adopt eco-conscious practices.

Across the Group, Frasers Property saw significant improvement in its overall GRESB 2023 scores. It will continue to build momentum, capacities and capabilities across its employees and stakeholders across the value chain as it progresses on its journey to achieve net-zero carbon.
